Total honesty with ourselves is threatening because it means we have to face the full extent of our ugliness — but it’s also liberating because that’s the broken place where the grace of God gets to work, where Jesus rolls up his sleeves and painfully frees us from the lies we have believed. It’s more complex than sitting in a circle and sharing those safe, surface confessions, but it’s also just as simple as trusting a gentle authority who loves you and leads you into joyful, challenging adventure.
