What’s really underneath all this religious scaffolding? It’s great to be desperate for God’s voice — but what is that for, really? To say that you heard it? Do you win something? Let’s say you really did hear God’s Voice and He told you His Will. Would you even really want to know it? Because that by itself is a hugely scary audacious proposition. The idea of God’s Will is attractive until God actually reveals Himself in universe-exploding glory. Your life would quit being your life. I’d rather get to the end and say, “Well God I didn’t know you wanted me to martyr myself in Uganda” — than to say, “Lord, I knew … but I’m a stubborn selfish moron.
