If you tell someone, ‘I love you and I’m praying for you, BUT —’ then it’s conditional. You’re adding burdens and chains and performance-driven anxiety. It’s better just to be honest about it instead of pretending you’re some kind of all-loving saint. I’d be thrilled to hear, ‘I can’t stand you and I’ll be praying for myself to love you better,’ because at least I won’t get confused. Don’t act Christianese for the sake of saving face. I’d rather you be an honest jerk then send me mixed messages.
